What contractor solution is right for me?

Using an umbrella provider means your Agency is outsourcing the employment responsibilities for your Contractors that otherwise would fall upon you. Further, an Umbrella provider reduces the administration typically associated with engaging contractors e.g. Insurance, Pensions and payroll.

A fully employed solution with a host of benefits and is one of the most common choices for the modern contractor

An umbrella company acts as your employer and enables you to transition between agencies and assignments. This ensures Tax and NI is dealt with, provides you access to a range of benefits and rewards, means you are always fully insured for the work you do and is recognised as continuous employment when applying for things like a mortgage.

Umbrella FAQ's

An umbrella company acts as a third party employer for contractors to enable them to move between agencies and assignments but maintain continual employment and associated benefits. This gives them the flexibility of contracting but also the benefits of employment e.g. when applying for a mortgage or finance. The Umbrella fully insures the Contractor and deals with all aspects of contracts, invoicing, cash collection, payroll and pensions.

Employers NI is a deduction which is made from the Assignment/Pay rate that each Contractor negotiates with their Client/Agency.

All Employers, including GTP are obliged to make the deduction and pay it straight to HMRC at the current rate of 13.8%.

Depending on the requirements of the Agency you are working with you may need to send us a copy of your timesheet but don’t worry – we will let you know if that is the case.

One of the key features of working through an GTP is that Contractors benefit from a level of insurance cover that would be expensive to acquire if you were to purchase it individually.

  2. Public Liability – cover if you damage something on site
  3. Personal Accident – cover if you have an accident either commuting to or on site

An Umbrella Company’s Margin is an amount retained each week/ month from the funds it receives from an agency or client on behalf of a Contractor.

This margin used to cover GTP’s own costs to run the business as well as providing things like contractor insurances and also to pay for other costs such as SSP.

You will always be told what the margin is before you start an assignment and it will be fixed for that contract.

A self employed solution for those in Construction

Subject to certain checks, you will become a Sole trader and work under the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS). Typically this means 20% tax will be deducted from each payment as an advance contribution to your annual PAYE and National Insurance bill. Ginger Tree’s margin will also be deducted and that covers dedicated support and comprehensive insurance. At the end of the financial year you will need to complete a tax return which will potentially allow you to claim some of that tax back.

CIS FAQ's

A self-employed contractor or “Sole Trader” works for themselves, either sourcing and undertaking their own projects of finding work through an agency. If you are self-employed in the building or construction trade, then you should pay tax under the construction industry scheme (CIS).

GTP is obliged to withhold an amount of money from any payments it makes to its subcontractors. Typically, this is 20% if the subcontractor has a verified UTR Number or 30% if not.

The deduction is paid straight to HMRC and is in effect a pre-payment of the Subcontractors tax bill for the year. At the end of the financial year the subcontractor will need to complete a tax return which will potentially generate a rebate to them.

The Company’s Margin is an amount retained each week/ month from the funds it receives from an agency or client on behalf of a Contractor.

This margin used to cover GTP’s own costs to run the business as well as providing things like contractor insurances and also to pay for other costs such as SSP.
